Reading and Language Arts 6th and Up Package

$

This reading and language arts package is designed for students reading at 6th grade level and up. This package addresses reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary up to a 12th grade level. It also works on filling any K-5th grade level phonics, language (grammar, usage, and mechanics) gaps before powerfully working on 6th to 8th grade level word study, grammar, and reading comprehension and textual analysis. It also offers writer’s workshop lessons up to an 8th grade level as well. Although, I’m sure many adults would say they were never taught skills at the higher end of the range. We do also offer instructor-led semester-long writing courses separately for students who could use more teacher-guidance in a small group online class setting.

This Reading and Language Arts package includes:

Reading Plus–fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, visual tracking–20-40 minutes

Lexia Power Up Literacy–word study, reading comprehension and textual analysis, and grammar–30 minutes

Moby Max–use any or all of these components to fill grammar, usage, and mechanics skill gaps, build vocabulary, build reading comprehension skills, writer’s workshop

Wordly Wise 3000 onlineprovides deep instruction in vocabulary including multiple meanings and nuances with the application of that vocabulary to a reading comprehension lesson. We recommend one lesson per week in Wordly Wise which typically takes about 15-20 minutes daily.

This Reading and Language Arts Online Package includes:

  • 6 months online access to Reading Plus, Moby Max, and Wordly Wise 3000 online
  • Weekly reports on student usage in Reading Plus, Lexia & Moby Max, plus monthly in Wordly Wise

More details about the programs included in this Reading and Language Arts package:

Reading Plus has three sections which address fluency and comprehension (SeeReader), vocabulary (ReadAround), and eye-tracking exercises(iBalance). The SeeReader passages should take priority and take around 12-20 minutes each to complete. The number of ReadAround and iBalance lessons recommended each week will depend on the student’s placement. Each takes around 10 minutes. Not all students need the iBalance lessons.

Lexia Power Up Literacy is designed for students 6th grade and up. While it supposedly only goes up through 8th grade level skills, many adults would say they never were taught many of these skill until high school, if ever. So, I recommend at least doing the placement assessment for all 6th grade and up students. Students separately place into each of the three strands: Word Study, Grammar, and Reading Comprehension. Word Study fill fill in any K-5th phonics gaps and the move on to more advanced Greek and Latin word parts. The Grammar section lays any foundations needed on basic grammar and then moves on to more complex grammar skills. The Reading Comprehension sections guides the students in learning how to analyze a text and appreciate elements of the author’s craft, in addition to more core reading comprehension skills. It works on teaching deeper comprehension, rather than just practicing and being held accountable for comprehension. This is a total overhaul and upgrade for Lexia Strategies. Coming this summer!

Wordly Wise provides deep instruction in vocabulary with an application of that vocabulary to a reading comprehension lesson. We recommend one lesson per week in Wordly Wise which typically takes about 15-20 minutes daily.

Moby Max

Moby Max is excellent for filling in skill gaps up through the 8th grade level. It starts with diagnostic placement assessments and then provides mini-lessons and short practice sets to address any skills not mastered.

  • Moby Max Language targets filling skill gaps in grammar, usage, and mechanics. We recommend 10 minutes daily working in the individually assigned lessons based on the student’s placement assessment.
  • Moby Max Vocabulary allows the student to test out of words they already know so they focus only on words they have not yet mastered. The vocabulary work isn’t as deep as in Wordly Wise, but the spaced repetition and review built into Moby Max Vocabulary helps the student truly master the words they are working on. Some students just use the Wordly Wise for vocabulary. Moby Max Vocabulary goes up to 7th grade level.
  • Moby Max Writer’s Workshop provides mini-lessons teaching students skills to write in a variety of genres and provides mini-practice application exercises. The parent does need to provide feedback to the student on this as that is not included in this package.
  • Moby Max Reading Skills Informational and Moby Max Reading Skills Literature provide targeted mini-lessons. to build different types of comprehension skills.
